if you want to upload it, it has to be on your computer somewhere. when you save the file in stepmania, where does it end up

In the same folder as the songs.
Assuming the default location:
C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs\<group>\<song>

More specifically...

...when you make an edit in Stepmania's editor, it doesn't make a .edit file, it makes edit-difficulty steps WITHIN THE SONG. In order to make an edit file, you need to undergo a process to extract those steps and make a .edit file. This process is described here... since edits aren't officially supported yet.
