Since locations' quality of service tends to go up and down at times, I think it would be useful to allow users to modify the ratings they give. Right now, each user can only rate a location once and then it's done. If the place goes to crap and nobody can change their vote, then the information becomes misleading.
It would make the locator page a lot more useful if there was a mechanism in place to expire and discard old votes. Additionally, allowing users to re-vote (overriding any old vote they placed) would make it easier to keep location quality data as accurate as possible. |

You could always delete your cache/cookies and revote again IIRC. _________________

Even if that did work, it doesn't have anything to do with what I was suggesting. |

wait, if you made it so it could be edited or if you would have to revote? because if after a while it expires and the location is still the same, youd have to redo it.
but dude, thats an awesome idea. theres so many places in vegas need re editing. _________________

Well it could be that you can edit your vote for it later. That way people don't have to go to their favorite/most-hated locations just to rate it again month after month or something like that. _________________

Just a suggestion on how this would work, to see if I've got the right idea:
1. Votes are timestamped.
2. Votes are userstamped.
3. The vote score displayed is a compilation of all the votes made in the last, say, three months. If someone voted over three months ago, then that vote is no longer included in the score. If this causes the location to have fewer than five votes in total, then additional scores are referenced in reverse chronological order to increase the tally to five, if possible.
4. If a user has already voted, then the DB just updates the timestamp and the score. _________________

So wait, are you saying the votes are userstamped? _________________

I suppose that'd be best as then the database then knows "user" has voted "number" for location "whatever" at "time/date" so that it could know to overwrite it later if you have to change your vote, etc. _________________

By "userstamped" I mean whatever mechanism is currently in place to prevent people from voting repeatedly. _________________

I don't like the idea of having only the last x votes counted or votes made in the last x days/months/years counted. I would think that if a regular likes a location, that s/he could make the vote once. If we changed it, then that would discourge the said person from voting in the first place (as the user would have to re-vote again every x days/months). _________________

Well, my thinking is that if the location is popular enough, then it'll get the votes it needs over time. If it's not that popular, it probably won't get very many votes to begin with, and so the "minimum vote" threshold helps to ensure that the location has some representation to begin with.
The numbers I stated were just off the cuff. Since the precision of the displayed score is only to one hundredth of a point, you can have a certain minimum number of votes and further voting will only change the math behind the score, and not the score itself. _________________

Cutriss, your suggenstion is excellent. Ignore all the pointless blather and go for it. You've thought out a reasonable and effective rating system that will better reflect the quality of a DDR location. _________________

3 months is a pretty long time. |

truly. 3 months is good enough. in some places, the condition of the machines can change monthly. in 1 month, my arcade went from max2 good condition, to megamix, to bad condition, to out of service. and hasnt changed except for a crappy mod i gave it a long time ago.
