At another forum I post in they have a feature in which you can ignore a thread or person, so that they just don't appear to you. I know it often prevented flame wars, as when one person flamed another, the other person just added him to his ignore list.

I'm sure they could always go back and change their mind about the thread/person. At least that's the way I see it. I don't think that would be too bad of an idea at all.
