I was just wondering, is there any sort of thing like 'freestyling' in IIDX? I mean, I know you really can't hit the wrong notes and get points or anything and I know you can't make up dance routines for it, but I mean is there any sort of thing like freestyling, i.e., not playing it the way it was intended to be played...? _________________

How about AAA'ing Stoic Another Random with my penis? If that's not freestyle, I don't know what is.

Freestyling is now officially defined as "not playing the game as it was meant to be played". Thanks for letting us all know! ;-)

yeah, beatmania is a game where freestyling is just not right, at least not dancing while playing or something. adding notes when they sound right on an easy song can sound cool if done correctly. _________________

Um...what about using your hands to freestyle? Try sweeping your hand to clear a bunch of 1/32 or 1/16 triplet scaling notes, or something like that. |

I've seen videos of guys freestyling on Dance Maniax and Pop'n Music. Just be glad that it hasn't spread to IIDX yet.

It hasn't??????
On an unrelated note, that "adding notes" thing you speak of isn't freestyling, it's called "arrange play".

I was going to say the same thing about Beatmania freestyling not being as bad as the PnM freestyling. It's hard to believe that PnM freestyling is pretty popular in Japan. |

It's pretty big in certain areas, according to some reports. Maybe Aaron can fill us in on the insanity.

Pop'n Music Freestyling in Japan may not be "big" as say...DDR Freestyling in America, but there are places where it is definitely practiced. The "Freedom" arcade where I sometimes play DDR features Pop'n Freestyle from time to time. I have also seen guys in Kamiooka (at "The Earth") do it as well, and I have heard reports on the game.2ch bbs about sightings of these...er..."freestyle acts". It is more of a cult thing than anything.
I blame that on the so-called "100 Pop'n Music tricks checklist" which was going around but I can't find it anymore. It was just a list of challenges such as finish some random EX song with only one hand (yes, you can get 4 buttons at the same time if you slide your hand *really* fast), finish with a specific score, number of greats, using odd hand patterns, etc., Some of those became the foundation for the "freestyle" acts you see in those vids on my page.
IIDX Freestyle is almost unheard of, however, at least from what I have heard/seen. I imagine those Pop'n people could do something with it, but I haven't seen them try it...yet.
GF doesn't have any freestyle par se, but I have seen a few guys play it without taking the guitar out of the metal...support. They wrap their fingers in under the metal hook and press the buttons that way. It *really* hurts and strains your fingers after a short while, though. I have a pic on my "Extra pics" page I believe.
I have seen rather odd things with Ikaruga (a shooting game, unrelated) where guys would play both players at once and not lose a ship on either side until 3rd stage...but that is a different kind of insanity. |
