Okay, here's the deal. I've got most of the stuff in the keyboard mega pack AA'd but I feel that playing with indexes is holding me back, expecially on songs like gravity, snow and never gonna come back down. I have tried to play with four fingers on these songs, but I have no experience at all with it so I can't even begin to comprehend how people play like this. I think that if I was able to play like this it would make me a better player.

I managed to A quasar with my left hand index and middle fingers on left and down and my right hand fingers on up and left, which is quite lower than AAAing it :/. So how do you guys do it? Any particular orentation? Anything you can contribute will be helpful to me, but as of now I am kinda forcing myself to play a way that is making me worse.

I personally go index and middle on my right hand, index on my left. No matter how hard I try, I just can't get that 4th finger working. I can AA most of the 11s in the megapack, but barely pass the 12s. AA on Quasar also, at like 1.2x song speed I believe.

I play 4 fingers, and Im pretty good at some of the songs in the megapack. I still cant pass Dokudenpa, but I get about 80% through it. Its that last fast run that gets me.

I use middle finger and index finger on left hand, middle and ring finger on right hand (yeah i dont use my index).

Examples

zx 23 (23 on the num pad)
zx,.
as;'
qwp[
1290

WHOA!!! Nero you are the first person ever to use the same setup as me AFAIK. Don't you just hate those 8686868 runs? Anyways, yeah I play the same way as Nero. But on fast runs I switch to an index-like method, except I mainly use my 2 middle fingers and every once in a while I hit a right or a left with my other right or left finger. It's weird, and I'd show you but I don't have a digital camera or a camcorder :/.

I dont use numpad, i use arrow keys.

But yeah, the 868686 (up, right, up, right) method does suck onehanded, so what i usually do is keep my right ring finger on the Right arrow key, and i use my index finger on my left hand for the Up key. Goes alot faster. Other than that, its good for me.

I've tried that, just doesn't work for me. My years of l33t DDR-ing has made my mind with the reflex LEFTDOWNUPRIGHT, and my fingers start going like up and down and every which way....

Yeah didn't end well.

I don't play numpad either Nero, just faster to type 868686 than up right up right etc... And yeah, I sometimes do the index left and ring right for those, but sometimes I can't switch in time and I miss half of the arrows :/

Just to let you people know, I *AM* trying to do everything that you suggest.

My test subjest is my good ol' Quasar

heavymax2nut's suggestion didn't work at all for me. I found it very awkward.

joe's suggestion of a spread setup (I used zxnm) had a very different feel then any other setup I tried, but I still couldn't grasp it.

Nerosuferoth's suggestion worked fairly well. It was the best one so far. It didn't feel natural to me though so then I ....

...tried this. This is me playing with left index and middle on left and down and right index and middle on up and right. I got over a 300 combo, and it was my best so far, but I still can't perform very naturally, unlike indexes, with any of these setups.

I've never tried that particular 4-finger setup, I'll check it out right now. I'll edit the results in...

EDIT: Yeeeahh.... that was the first try of your setup. Eeehhhh notsogood.

Just for kicks, I ran indexes. *shrug* pretty good. Here's a typical performance of my 3-finger setup, just for reference.

I love how we're both on Techno Fiend E15.gif

This is my setup that help me get a good grade on most songs.

Middle finger of Left Hand- Left Key
Index finger of Left Hand- Down Key
Index finger of Right Hand- Up Key
Middle finger of Right Hand- Right Key

There is my setup!

Nic, that is my best four fingered playing style so far.

Oh, and gotta love Techno Fiend. Techno fiend 3 is out you know.

Also, I've AAA'd Quasar indexed. And AA'd 7/8ths of the Keyboard Mega Pack. I see people like Nima play four fingered and I don't know how they do it. I want to learn to play four fingered because it will make things like Gravity, Snow, Vanish into thin air, Genocide (Reach's, which is incredibly biased against indexers, but oh well), Moon Child (once again Reach's) much much easier...

I use middle and ring fingers on my right hand, because when i try to use my index and middle, my hand feels like its bent and turning wrong. but with middle and ring, it feels natural, because the hand is straight.

Lol it just takes practise. I use a split setup, 12 and ;' . Genocide is easy to AAA XD

Just using the arrow keys will help on certain songs but the split setup is more comfortable most of the time.

When I saw last posted: Reach my eyes were all like O_O

Okay, so Reach is good at spread setup. I can see how theoretically you don't have to adjust your fingers or anything for jumps because your fingers would always be above the keys.

....and Reach? Do you use 12 on the numpad or the other ones?

Duuuuuudde.... the Reach has graced us with his presence... I feel unworthy nerd.gif

Reach does a spread setup, well I'm gonna try a little harder on it then. I still have the problem of my fingers trying to go up and down and left and stuff, just from instinct/reflex.

Theoretically, once you get past that, spread should be the best, because like then you don't have to crossover or worry about scrunched up fingers or anything.

I'm liking the spread... I just picked gravity on a whim and got an A, which is what I usually get indexed as well.

I think I'm going to keep practicing spread...

I'm having serious issues with the spread, even though I see lots of potential for it. I have serious issues anytime I get the two next to each other, though. This includes a straight URURURURUR trill, or even just like LDURURUDLDLD or anything like that. How do you do it?

Patterns like those are made for index players. They are much harder to hit on spread setup! (but still passable) Keep working at it!

Try working on songs like flight of the bumble bee, uber rave and dokudenpa. They have a lot of those patterns that will help the beginning spread setup player (albeit they are hard!)
