First off, hi and welcome, you'll find it nice and cozy here! I have a DDR system at home and I've had it since last Decmember. If you love DDR like I do, then I'm sure you'll play it all the time and never get tired of it. I still play it almost everyday and I absolutly love every moment of it. I'm about to get some hard pads, but right now I have the soft pads, the brand new ones(forgot the mix) that they sell at Babbages, thoes work really nicely, or some of my friends have the ignition pads that are really nice. They're like an inch thick with the arrow inserts in them. I'd look on E-Bay if I were you, thats where I'm getting my stuff from. Welcome again! _________________

Try here
Short answer, DDR max plus a soft pad only costs about 60 bucks at any game store. It's well worth it to get started.[/url] _________________

If you've got a lot of money...
Buy 2 Cobalt Flux Pads w/ doubles kit, buy a PS->USB converter for two controllers, get Stepmania...
If you're looking to save a little money...
Buy 2 soft pads (prefferably ignition pads), buy PS->USB converter for two controllers, get Stepmania...
Check the DDR Simulator board for more info on Stepmania, but trust me, it's youre best friend. _________________

There is also a thread in DDR Arcade about Home vs Arcade, if you would like to read that. But read the DDR Console forum to get the complete idea behind home play. _________________

absoluitly. start with a PsOne and Dance Dance Revoluition (the first american mix) and a DPR 2 pad. then try konaimix.
if you have one, buy max and soon to be max2 for ps2.
then if u really like it, somehow get a convertor or mod chip for the psone, and play imports. i reccomend 3rd.
kinda scattered, but i still get my point across.

I suggest getting an American version, i.e. Konamix or Max USA, so you don't have to deal with mod chips at all, but if the mod chips arent a problem for you, then I suggest a 4th or a 5th mix for the PS1, they have the best songs in my opinion.
Now as for a pad, don't get the konami soft pads, they are poor quality, and they slip and slide all over the place, I would suggest a metal pad, but since you don't have the money, I would suggest an ignition pad, they are more heavy duty than your average soft pad, and arent that expensive (around the $50-60 range on ebay). Its duribility is a bit on the crappy side, but if you mod it right (and I can show you how) you can increase the sensor's sensitivity and make the pad last a lot longer. |

DDR at home is definately worth it. I have DDRMAX and a DPR2. My system works as follows: Buy a DPR2, use until sensors slide into wrong place, buy new DPR2, play a couple rounds of doubles, and retire the broken pad into pad-coverdom. It makes a really good cover and keeps the other pad really flat! The cycle takes 2 months. Good luck! _________________

Me and My bro are getting a hard pad each for, like, 450.00$. EACH! He's getting one for his birthday(Note: that is all he is getting for his birthday ), and I am buying it out of my own money ($$$ $$$) on the same day. the day is aug 27, or somewhere in that area. Yes, it is most definately worth getting at home. And, if you are a hardcore bastard, You could buy a cheap vid camera, and send a funny vid for 10G. that would be enough to get your self a whole arcade machine( )! |
Youre both getting seriously ripped off. A cobalt flux (the best home pad out to date) is only 340 with shipping. get one at www.cobaltflux.com Unless youre both getting 2. _________________

Well, it's good to get home because you have the full effect, but in the comfort of your own home... if you wanna try freestyling without people making fun of you, play at home. Heck, play in you underwear for all i care.
This is what I did. I bought DDRMAX on PS2 and a 3rd party mat (dance pad reveloution or something like that) then, check this out. http://www.ddrfreak.com/library/faqs-modding.php this will cost 20 greens, but its well worth it. and you can play with shoes on. if your not modding, i suggest playing in socks. it helps you slide! |

Well, DDR at home's not bad, but you'll realize that, no matter what, you'll find yourself going back to the arcade. Maybe you won't be going back to the arcade as OFTEN, but you will.
I've got the RedOctane basic setup at home, with two Topway pads, two pad covers, and DDR USA/Konamix (don't own a PS2). Even after over a year and a half (or almost a year and a half, for Konamix), I'm still playing it. (Pads haven't worn out yet. Yay me!)
So I think the answer you're looking for is: no, it won't get boring. As a matter of fact, you might find a couple songs you really like that you just can't find on your local machine, and play those over and over again. (*coughAM-3Pcough*)
Go and buy'em. You won't regret it. ^_^ _________________

Get a metal pad or Ignition pad. Anything else isn't worth it.
Get a PS->USB adapter and get Stepmania, or get Max2 for PS2. Anything else isn't worth it. |

I don't like the DDR USA games at all; like DDR USA, DDR Konamix, DDR MAX, etc. Reason being is because the songs are recycled over and over and I won't get the songs off the arcade mix. If I were you I suggest buying the import and it cost alot but worth it. Gotta have a mod chip, but I rather get the import cause I refuse to buy any DDR USA game. Or you can be like me and play SM on a TV with some good pads like CF. _________________
