I just bought a DDR for my daughter and the instruction booklet leaves much to be desired. What are the "jewel like shapes" that occur every now and then while the arrows are moving? What are supposed to do with these things?

...are they green and long?
if so, they're called a freeze arrow and all you do is when you see one instead of just tapping the mat with your foot you hold your foot on that arrow until the arrow is done.

hes probably talking about DDR hottest party for the wii. they have little diamond things and whenever they come up you have to swing your wiimote or something.

or he can mean when you stay on a freeze arrow until the end and the step zone that arrow was held till the end of the freeze arrow gives off the same effect as a 100 combo.

If you're talking about DDR Hottest Party, you may be talking about two things:

~> The Orange Diamond shapes, which are called hand-markers, which means that you must swing either the Wiimote (if it's on the right) or the Nunchuk (if it's on the left).
~> The off-colored pictures/arrows/whatever, which are called gimmicks. You do certain things to specific ones, which are given to you before a song starts (should there be gimmicks in the song).

Outside Hottest Party, the only thing I can think of are the green freeze arrows (which means you must hold your foot to that arrow until the freeze arrow is complete), but that's it.
