controlling other options w/ home built pad

I was wondering, how do you select a song, or press start/select when you only have four buttons on a pad?

You are still able to use your controler along with the pad, all buttons on the controller are still functional except for the directional or you can build extra buttons buttons into the pad (IE. x o /\ [].)

is there a simple way to make a start select x o box of some sort? Ive seen the terterbox, but i dont that thats what im looking for.
