There have been a few topics on this in the past, but it never hurts to have another...

I'm having a hard time playing DrumMania cross-handed due to the low position of the high-hat, and that makes what should be easy high-hat/snare/kick patterns difficult. I've tried various configurations of hand positioning and stick angles but only seem to end up with about an inch of clearance for the left stick on the snare, which is insufficient. In the end, I usually end up crossing my arms below the wrist. Doing this gives me sufficient space for the left hand, but is quite awkward for the right and stiffens up my whole arm. Result: decreased accuracy and lower speed.

So, what's the secret? Do I just have to learn to play with an inch of clearance on the left hand? Or is there some magic hand position that makes the problem go away? (Pictures? E15.gif) I know I should eventually develop the ability to lead with my left hand, but I'd prefer to postpone that if possible.

You have to kind of hold your left arm down low... almost slouching. This gives you a bit more space to cross your arms. I just prefer to play without my arms crossed. It was hard to get used to at first, but now that my left arm has developed enough muscle and rhythm to hold the hi-hat beat, I do fine.

ive seen cross-handed done well, and it looks better too instead of feverishly searching for which two hands to drumroll with.

Well, yeah, it can be done, and it does look better, but he is asking how to do it. I'm just saying it is possible to play without crossing your hands. Also, once you get used to it, you learn how to roll smoother. It's still not as easy crossing over, though.
