Can you upgrade to ITG/ITG2 from a 3rd Mix? What about a 1st Mix? It's just like upgrading to an ex.

As far as I know, yes, you can upgrade from any mix to ITG/ITG2.

Thanks. But would DDR 1st -> ITG 2 be like DDR -> DDREX with board switching?

You don't ever really "upgrade" from DDR -- you completely remove the DDR hardware from the cabinet & replace it with the new ITG computer & associated hardware. It's a completely different system. ITG runs on its own Linux computer that completely replaces the DDR system. All that's reused is the cabinet itself, the speakers, the monitor, the pads, and some of the connections. If you check the RoXoR website, you'll see that DDR -> ITG is a conversion, not an upgrade (ITG1 -> ITG2 is an upgrade). In fact, saying you can do it with "any mix" is misleading because it implies you need a DDR mix at all. Since you're going to be gutting much of the cabinet anyway, even a cabinet that's been pre-gutted & rendered totally mixless will work fine.

What about homemade cabinets?

It should be possible to put an ITG BoXoR in a homemade cabinet, but I think you'd need to buy & put in JAMMA hardware & maybe some other stuff. You'd need to do some research to figure out exactly what's needed. I don't know much about it. But you might be able to find some technical specs in the manuals here: http://roxorgames.com/support/index.php/Main_Page

I'm not sure if anybody's actually put a BoXoR in a homemade cabinet yet -- if the cabinet is for private, personal use, you probably don't have to worry about the copyright police busting down your door, so it'd be much cheaper & more flexible to just stick in a PC running Stepmania with all the ITG & DDR songs and more.

it'd certainly be interesting. there were a lot of very fun patterns on 6-panel. ninzaburo comes to mind.
