Do It Right
SOTA feat. Ebony Fay

Know what you wanna do, get into the groove
Well you just gotta move
And soon you'll know just what you really gotta do
So take it easy now, I can show you how
Just feel the beat inside, let the rhythm take hold and do it right

You can't give up, you can't give in
When things are looking like your world is tumbling down, you fight
You make the cut, you play to win
And it's guaranteed to be alright
Just do your best, just give your all
Dance to your rhythm, you can make forever start tonight
Don't let it rest, you'll never fall
Believe me

No matter what you do
Can't nobody hold your future back
Gotta go 'cause you know you'll leave them in your tracks
And when all is said and done, ain't no looking back now
Is it all how you dreamed it would be way back when?

Life is just a game
We play to see if we can get it right
God above sends his love to those who see his light
Even if you don't know, he's been there for you too
Did you think you'd get this far without his love?
I tell you what

Know what you wanna do, get into the groove
Well you just got to move
And then you'll know just what to do
So take it easy now, I can show you how
Just feel the love inside
Let the rhythm take hold and do it right, yeah

Braintrust, now tell me how YOU could misinterpret THAT.

Lyrics imply motivation and relationship, but you're probably ignoring that.

To me, that's talking about dancing. When I play music or dance, I "feel the beat inside". Anyway, much of the song seems to be a person teaching another how to dance. (Take it easy, feel beat inside, etc.)

After the Game of Love is blatent sexuality with some... extra, mentionables. (Censored)
Charlene is a song of avoiding bad things with detail of the content you should avoid. (Censored)
Do It Right is a song about music, rhythm, etc. and the ESRB doesn't censor based off slang sex synonyms. (Not Censored)

Got it?

Charlene is a song about "Dont Get Raped my little sister" holy crap, how did that not get heavily censored, or maybe they did a good enough job that i cant tell.

Charlene is more about "Charlene don't be a prostitute!" and it is heavily censored.

They might not misinterpret it if they actually listened to all the lyrics of all the songs, but judging by the ESRB FAQ, they do no such thing. They depend upon the publishers to submit a list of possibly offensive materials along with a video showing the gameplay. A three person panel then recommends a rating based on those items.

Since the quoted lyrics above do not contain any naughty words, they would likely have not been submitted as a possibly offensive item and would have never been noticed by the panel.

The ESRB FAQ that nobody has read wrote:
To get a game certified with an ESRB rating, publishers fill out a detailed questionnaire explaining exactly what's in the game, and submit it to ESRB along with actual videotaped footage of the game, showing the most extreme content and an accurate representation of the context and product as a whole. Working independently, three trained raters then view the game footage and recommend the rating and content descriptors they believe are most appropriate.

According to the ESRB site, PIU:Exceed is getting a Teen rating for "Suggestive Themes". There's no reason why ITG couldn't have released with a similar rating and kept their songs intact.

I hate cheap unnesessary censorship as much as the next person and I think the censored words in ITG are ridiculous. Does the ESRB really think kids are going to listen to the lyrics? What would the ESRB rate a Britney Spears album?

Having said that, this is what I think happend.

This is RO's first game. They were unware of how long it takes for things like ESRB ratings to come back or Sony to approve gold discs and they simply ran out of time to resubmit. I think an experienced game company knows how to get the rating they want (within reason of course). I also think the ESRB is becoming stricter to fend off recent threats of federal game legistation.

We will see what rating Extreme 2 has when it comes out. If it is E, then RO has some leverage to argue thier rating down for future games or learn how to make a better presentation to the ESRB. Hopefully by ITG2, RO will get "in the groove" (I know... goog.gif) of managing software projects and dealing with outside influences.

Maybe I haven't listened closely, but the main lyrics that stand out to me in this song are all the religious-sounding stuff. Could someone post the lyrics to the song so I can see what might piss off the ESRB if they cared?

For transliteration and translation, AnimeLyrics has a good page, so all can see for themselves.

In this area, some people have successfully argued that beatmania Is masturbation.

If I had never heard of bemani, I might assume that "Beat Mania" is something entirely different than a music game. Especially with things like "He is not left handed / likes to double play"

On a unrelated but kind of related note, DDR has at least one song with the word "Nigga" in it.

Brownie points for you if you can name it, or another one i totally forgot about.

Bu Dam says that word in it E1.gif. I am really sorry for bringing this up, but it really bothered me that no one knew this.

I have yet to play ITG, carry on.
EDIT: St00pidBaka, I hear something like "Ichineega taka" or something like that, but I dont think it is the "N word"

Okay, here's a c-p of the translation of the lyrics.

Now, remember, kids, when analyzing songs like this, one must consider context. Especially here. This is a KONAMI Original song. It appeared (first) on a relatively obscure BeatMania home version. A song about the game itself would be understood by the audience, especially those players (remember, a Japanese release) who spoke Japanese. While I do agree that certain parts of the song, taken out of context, can be misinterpreted, I think that looking at the song as a whole, including the game for which it was made, shows that it really is about music. I mean, it's almost the same issue here as with Do It Right.

Oh, and to make things more clear: All the modifiers in the song (they're BeatMania modifiers, mind you, so don't be surprised if they don't seem familiar to you) are sung in English, or Engrish (Nipponized English). Examples:
DABURU PUREI
APENDO
BIITO SHINGU
BIITO SHOKKU
HAI-SUPEE(de)
HIDEN Mode
SABAIBARU

And just because some of your friends have extrapolated an alternate meaning for a word based on a slang term for an action doesn't make it legitimate, or even common enough for most people to know what you're talking about.

Maybe some of the mentioned modifiers are suggestive to you based on that, but that seems more like a personal issue, ね?

Beatmania is good, clean, wholesome fun. :P

I think I understand now why RedOctane had to have an E rating on ITG, even at the cost of the music.

They recently relaunched GetUpMove.com with more of a focus on ITG, and if you look at this page, you'll see that RO is starting to push ITG and Ignition pads as components of a school phys ed program. In fact, they've started a whole new Generation FIT initiative to get their products into that market.

So, watching the videos on that page, what do we see? A bunch of 10 year olds playing ITG. That's why the songs are so oddly and heavily edited - RO needs to be able to sell ITG as part of their fitness solution and probably rightly thought that they wouldn't be able to even get in the front door with a Teen rated game if they are going to include elementary school programs.

ITG was edited for the children. Or so goes my speculative assertion. While a Teen rating would not have hurt retail sales, it would have severely hurt sales to schools, who are very touchy about such things, making the Teen rating unacceptable for RedOctane's marketing strategy.

They should have released the game uncensored, then made another copy that was censored for the school FIT programs.

But then when the kids go home and pester their parents to buy the game... Two versions creates more business problems than one badly edited version. After all - RO is a business and this whole FIT/GetUp&Move thing serves their economic goals, irrespective of any altruistic benefit.

Here is a way.

Release the game censored, BUT have a special unlock code that you can enter that would uncensor the songs. As long as you make it slightly awkard to put in and have a confirmation message that pops up kids wouldn't be able to put it in during school hours, and if they did it at home and parents complained they could let them know that their kids would have to have looked it up on the internet, and no not on their official site (you know post it here and stuff E4.gif )

I think censorship is pretty bad, and the stuff on the radio you hear is 10x worse than what they censored here.

Ah, an uncensor code, like the Mortal Kombat blood code from [old timer]back in the day.[/old timer] I like the idea in theory, but I don't think it would work. They'd have to put two versions of the songs that would "need" censored, and then program a way to replace the...

Hm, idea.

Say that there are two versions of the .sm file to those songs, with each pointing to a different version of the music but being identical otherwise. By default, the game loads all the censored versions, but the code somehow tells the game to load the unedited versions instead. I imagine that would be quite tricky to program, though. Getting back to what I was about to say before my train changed tracks there, I also doubt there'd really be the space to include all the extra music files that would entail.
