So I stumbled upon iidx in the gamestop and was awestruck for all of five minutes that the game i was pondering investing $300+ to import, mod my ps2, etc to get was there for only $65 WITH official controller that I will soon be modding when I have enough free time.
Im exstatic.

Now comes the learning curve.
Is there any way to figure out how to do certain combinations on IIDX that make it easier to learn, or is it more trial and error?

Frustrated, but still freaking happy. biggrin.gif

Forgive me if this has been asked before (I read the first 2 pages and the last 2), but where do you guys put your hands? I mean, when I try to use 2 hands I always end up with my arms twisted up and go back to trying to use 1 hand for keys and 1 for the turntable. I've thought about using right hand for white and left for black/turntable, but that feels incredibly awkward and looks lame to boot. Do you just use whichever hand is most convienient for each note or do you assign certain keys to a certain hand? Thanks.

Commonly it's 2 hands. There are some 1 hand players like Lisu.

I normally play 2p side. I use left pink on 1, ring finger on 2, left thumb on 3 left middle/index finger/right index on 4, right thumb on 5 , right middle finger on 6, and right ring finger on 7, right pinky for scratching. What I suggest is try out what you're confortable with.

n00b questions? ok

Ive recently picked up BMus and its a whole lotta fun. I've had it for around two weeks and I have trouble locating the keys without looking. I do have a basic idea of where they are, but on songs like Shining Polaris and Colors (beginner mode, and yes, I suck) it turns from key pressing, to hand spasms that just happen to hit the wrong key. Oh yeah, I cant do 321 stars either. E2.gif Can anybody help me out? Much appreciated.

Too bad you're not in CA, I could tell you a place where you could go pick one up..

Other then that, I'd say google it or look for one on Ebay.

I hastily jumped ship from Beginner to Light 7 (due to 1337 pressure), as the only songs on the latter I can hold on my own are 5.1.1 and Remember You, respectively.

Any suggestions for expansion?

I suggest move on to Hyper/7 keys. Those songs on aren't too hard. if anything I think you can pass it. Light 7/Normal is alright.

They're a store in CA. They can be pricey. I usually go there to pick up any IIDX styles since they're a local store.

Keep pushing forward on what you can do in Light7, and you might not wanna try most 7Key (although 511/Remember You are very easy on 7k too) until you're comfortable with some 5s or even a 6 or two on L7. Be careful, some songs are totally under-rated and will rape you pretty badly..usually L.E.D E13.gif

Its more of what you feel confortable with. Although id advise not to use one hand for the white keys and the other for the other keys. The way I play is ill keep my index and middle fingers together on both hands and hit them like that. But there are some songs that I just one hand on some parts because it feels right. My left hand is used for the turntable and I usually just pinky scratch. The way I play is I pay more attention to the keys and I see the scratch from my peripheral vision. Its wierd...I just got used to it. I had trouble locating the keys too but when I look at the notes I sort of divide the section through the middle black key so it didnt confuse me.

Get used to patterns first. Colors, Pandora and Quasar (all Hyper) are good beginning blocks. Once you can clear them consistently... Play on Mute. Once you've regulated out your long 16th runs, you'll be ready to JG anything.

This is advice coming from a noob who just passed Love is Eternity Another and just started on Mute Mode, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Mute Mode is really, REALLY helping my JG attack though.

As for the arguments about which styles are good for beginners:

I started on 8th style. Got 9th the next day, and 10th after. Cleared Colors Hyper the day i got 10th (if there are any lifebar nazis around here then it was an EASY CLEAR ok the point is i bet you couldn't easy clear it on your 3rd day). If that doesn't imply 8th+ make you improve faster, I don't know what does.

I got 4th later, played it once and never again. Got 7th last month, played it a couple times but since I'm a VJ Army whore and i hate inputting notecounts, I don't plan on playing it ever again. I might bust it out when I'm ready for MAX300 and that retarded jacks song again.

If you're going to be a VJA whore, start with something BEFORE 7th so that you get used to inputting notecounts. If running back and forth between your PS2 and PC 5 times every song isn't your thing, then 8th+ all the way baby

Dude

Pencil and paper. It takes 10 seconds. Either that or whip out a digital camera, snap a quick picture, and use that.

another n00bish question,
If one were to combine beatmania IIDX RED, happy sky, and DisTorteD (however its capitalized), would there be every single beatmania 7 key song that ever existed?

oh, and where could I see note charts for beatmania? you know, like ddr's step charts?

RED, HS, and DD are missing a fair amount of songs. CS songs, really old songs, etc.

Already happened with Burning Heat! biggrin.gif Btw, should I play by BPM? It's just that I noticed that the aforementioned songs I can pass on L7 are within the 100-109 BPM range.

Here's my break-down:
Playing 6* and less 7K and mostly all L7 songs.
Waiting for IIDX Red right now, but playing on BMUS.

What can I do to improve my note reading and hitting long strings, i.e. Presto?

Have you trying playing around with your speed settings? BPM really isn't as much a factor as it is in DDR, for making songs harder or easier (though I find slower, sub-110bpm songs a pain in the buttocks without a towel), so it shouldn't make much a difference in your passing faster or slower songs.

Unless it's stuff like Checking You Out or Fun, where the BPM is all over the place and you can't get a decent read. Then it's just screwy. -__-

1. I don't the IIDX speed mods at all (well, at least, not yet).
2. Weird, because I don't use the towel on 5.1.1 and Remember You. In addition, I've noticed that Burning Heat! and Love is Orange run too fast for me to keep up on. Also, do the notes run more in tune like GFdm, now that you mentioned that it's BPM-independent, unlike DDR?
