Since there are people that dont play IIDX, like me, I thought I'd make this up.

Anyway, is Beatmania Best Hits and SoT worth a buy?

Sound of Tokyo only has about a dozen songs, but it's still fairly entertaining. The songs are a few minutes in length, as well, rather than the usual 1:40 from other Beatmanias. It's a neat novelty, but don't try to subsist on it alone.

Best Hits has better songs than Sound of Tokyo.

Best Hits is better. However, if you are looking to get two mixes, I'd probably recommend 6th + core remix and 5th mix.

The song interface selection is great on best hits, 5th and 6th. I'm not a big fan of the interface that is used on 4th mix and below.

Beatmania's lure for me was needing only a PS1 mod rather than a PS2 mod. I still haven't tried IIDX.

Are other Beatmania players playing both Beatmania and Beatmania IIDX? Or have you switched to IIDX once trying it?

Same here. IIDX is great fun and the presentation is awesome, but its just too much of an investment.

By the way, in 5th Mix, how on earth do I unlock stuff for Free Mode? I Live Just 4 U is getting old.

Free mode songs are unlocked whenever you play a song in arcade mode. For example: If your playing Popcorn in arcade mode, whether you pass it or not, it should appear in free mode. Oh yeah, make sure you save your game or else it won't be there after you turn the power off. You may just wanna put on auto save so whenever you exit arcade mode then the psx will save automatically.

I've never really played too much BM. A couple of games on a CM1 and CM2, but other than that pretty much nothing. I do play a lot of IIDX though. 8th style in the arcade and for my JPS2 I have 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th styles to go with my IIDX arcade style controller and a normal Konami IIDX controller.

I played 5-key for a year before I moved to IIDX.

While I love a lot of the music in IIDX, and I dig the interface and the movies and all of that, and it's certainly a HUGE challenge, I have a lot of old favorite songs from 5-key that I will likely be dropping back to 6th+Core.

(And don't kid yourself, the cost of modding a PS2 these days is the same as modding a PS1. E1.gif )

Good LORD! Where have you been shopping? I modded my PSOne for 10 dollars!!!

*cough* anyway, I'm playing Beatmania less and less...my problem is I need more songs. Manmachine Plays Jazz is getting old (that's the hardest song I can beat, by the way. disgust.gif ) Bought a JPS2, and I was planning to get IIDX but a Pop n' Music controller surfaced on Ebay (non-ASC) and I immediately grabbed it. So IIDX 5th will have to wait until after I get Pop n' Best Hits! happy.gif

I don't think I'll give up 5-key once I start playing IIDX. Can't play Hell Scaper on IIDX!!!!

I play more IIDX than beatmania now, but i still love beatmania. Sounds of Tokyo is worth it for the intro alone(as wierd as it is). If you have 6th plus core, and are getting Best hits, then your good.

IIDX is beatmania, it's just the 7 key version and it's harder. I actually have been playing Beatmania III 7th Mix more often now ('cause that's what my arcade has), but I agree, SoT is worth it... but 6th + Core Remix and Pop'n best hits are all you really need. And Remy is right, modding your PS2 is not a big deal anymore, I modded mine with a cover-mod for under $50 and it plays all imports I've got just fine.

~Peace~
